Treating a guest like royalty has been customary in Lithuania since ancient times. Whether an acquaintance comes or a relative arrives, the hostess will make quite a fuss of accepting them. A table with a dizzy array of dishes often exceeding normal portions is always guaranteed. Foreign tourists can still find this tradition of friendly hospitality combined with today’s modern services and facilities in most of the Lithuanian hotels and other places to stay whether they come for business or leisure. Or both.
Since the time Lithuania regained independence from the Soviet Union sixteen years ago and entered the EU in 2004, communication between Lithuania and the rest of the world now takes place on a more global scale and is much more intensive than it was, for example, a decade ago. As international communication is closely related with migration, there has been a significant increase in incoming tourism during the last years. Consequently, Lithuanian hotels have encountered a serious task to provide foreign guests with accommodation which could satisfy their quantitative as well as qualitative needs. This has determined a rapid development of hotel business in Lithuania. Major Lithuanian cities now bristle with so many hotels that it is pretty much impossible to pick the perfect one to stay.
The most popular places to stay in Lithuania are the capital city Vilnius, the second largest city of Lithuania Kaunas, the seaport Klaipėda, and the popular resort towns Palanga and Druskininkai. Certainly, the widest variety of accommodation is offered in Vilnius, although Evalda Šiškauskienė, President of the Lithuanian Hotel and Restaurant Association, points out that with the increasing number of foreign tourists in Eastern Europe, hotel business is going to expand in other Lithuanian cities and towns as well.
In Vilnius, hotels vary from up-market to very cheap including middle-range and budget accommodation. Average single room price varies from €100 in luxury hotels to €30 in budget hotels and €8 for triples in, for example, Vilnius Youth Tourist Centre.
Depending their needs, holiday-makers, business travellers and foreign guests can choose singles, doubles, triples, family, business class, suites or apartments in Vilnius as well as other major Lithuanian cities. When it comes to facilities and style, hotels range from luxury accommodations boasting spacious rooms with wonderful vistas, exquisite ballrooms, heated floors in the bathrooms and casinos to the less extravagant budget hotels featuring all the comforts one would expect: air conditioning, satellite and pay TV, safes, mini-bars, secure parking lots, etc.
In addition to the usual accommodation services, many hotels in Lithuania come with all the add-ons for today’s demanding traveller, including business facilities, up-to-date conference rooms and a galaxy of luxuries for leisure including swimming pools, saunas, spas, well-equipped fitness rooms and so on.
Our strongest impressions of the places we visit are often about the level of hospitality and the quality of the services we receive. Helpful and professional staff and the high quality services Lithuanian hotels can offer guarantee a pleasant and enjoyable stay.
