Airsoft is a team game where players take part in a military combat simulation (MilSim) or law-enforcement-style combat using smoothbore airsoft guns designed as replicas of real firearms. Many airsoft models use plastic projectiles.
As the base for confrontation in fire-fights and other quarters, teams get goals to be achieved or missions to be carried out. Sometimes, the scenario and setting of airsoft games are designed to simulate a specific real-world battle as a form of historical or modern re-enactment. The winner team is the one which fulfils the tasks or loses fewer soldiers than the other team. The run of the game, the scenario, and the location are a matter of agreement; nothing is restricted except for actions that contradict safety precautions.
Airsoft can be played by both men and women of the full legal age, with an exception to those mentally ill. The number of participants or teams is not defined.
Airsoft has its roots in 1980s, Japan. Since firearms were impossible or hard to come by because of local laws, Japanese found a smart way out: they started making replicas of real guns using small plastic pellets. In the beginning firearms were single-shot, so they had to be reloaded after each shot. Later on, there appeared guns using compressed air (or gas) to launch their projectiles, which allowed for a shot to take place every time the trigger is pressed, or repeated shots in a row if the trigger is held down. Then there appeared electric guns, which are the most widespread today. Since its beginning, airsoft has become popular in many countries all over the world.
In Lithuania, airsoft is still a novelty. It reached Lithuania only in 2004; however the game is speedily gaining popularity among various groups of people: students, businesspeople, military officers, policemen or other groups of people working in legal structures.
As airsoft enthusiasts describe it, airsoft is a pastime activity, a sport and a stage at the same time. Moreover, it is both fun and useful. The play offers a wonderful opportunity to spend some quality time with your friends, test your abilities, get a dose of adrenalin, and feel a real soldier while taking part in a historical re-enactment of a battle or war. The game requires the ability to make snap decisions, taking on responsibility and trust among the participants, so players often discover personal traits in them they never knew they have. Last but not least, airsoft is ideal for corporate entertainment: client entertainment, team building events or staff incentives.
