Staff management There is always something which moves people to action. It is motivation - a reason giving purpose and direction to our behaviour. Since employee performance largely depends on the presence or absence of motivation, keeping employees motivated is one of the major tasks in staff management.

All human life is in essence making decisions of various kinds. What forces us to behave in one or another way is in most cases the expectation for benefit or the fear of the possible outcome. We switch on TV hoping for entertaining programmes, or, when it is freezing outside, we put on warm clothes before going out for fear of getting cold. Many psychological needs such as the need for recognition, belonging, the sense of development and achievement may be very strong motivators as well.

Where employee tasks are based on teamwork, the level of employee performance will largely depend on whether their psychological needs are satisfied or not. Healthy team relationships and cooperation skills can facilitate motivation among employees; but healthy communication habits and collaboration skills have to be somehow developed and sustained. Team building away-days and group travel programmes featuring engaging team activities and team games may well serve this purpose.

Sharing emotions is the principle of interpersonal communication. A simple way to promote communication based on positive emotions in the team is corporate activity days, which may include an array of outdoor activities ranging from extreme to recreational: canoeing, off-roading, airsoft, regatta, cycling, horse riding, cruising, etc. Such team activities usually involve ice-breaking, fun, challenging, and often unexpected situations which allow for spontaneous, lively interaction, sharing positive impressions and excitement about the experience.

Entertaining team games help to develop communication skills. The participants learn to handle argument, support one another, discuss and make decisions together so that everyone feels an equal member of the team.

Facing common challenges and the sense of achievement as the result of team work helps to build a positive mood in the team. The sense of development adds to the feeling of self-worth and self-esteem on personal as well as team level. Moreover, challenges help to see the people you work with in a new light. And the more you know the person you work with, the easier it is to understand them, tolerate their differences and appreciate their attitudes (or at least learn how to avoid meaningless conflict).

Good relationships in the team are a powerful motivator. Don’t miss the simple but effective ways of building them.
