Hair-raising stories of the kind ‘believe it or not’ are always so compelling. They frighten us, yet we can’t resist them. One can find horror elements in ancient myths and folk tales as well as in contemporary art. As a rule, scary stories have to do with some secret and human curiosity, danger and the human pursue for adventure, oaths and their violation. They engage us into a fantasy mixed with reality.
Why not add a bit of thrill to your corporate holidays Lithuanian tourist operators offer an exciting acquaintance with the Old Town of Lithuania’s capital city Vilnius and its ghostly secrets of the past.
While wandering along the narrow streets of the Old Town, you will hear long forgotten stories of ghosts haunting in the city. Barbakan (the former place of guillotine), Cathedral, St. Michael’s Church, Sts. Johns’ Church - they say these places are frequented by ghosts.
Vilnius Cathedral reminds us a sad love story of Žygimantas Augustas (the Grand Duke of 16th century Lithuania). The frightened boy did as he had been told. But as he touched the ring of the dead, the latter suddenly caught him by the hand, sat up and shouted out, “My brothers sinners, help me!”. Then out the vaults the bodies of the dead, some of them half, some fully, decayed, started to rise and gather in the church. The air got filled with stink and frightful sounds. Only the boy’s exclamation “Jesus!” and the song of the cock broke the spell and saved him from the dead. Though not for long: several days after that the boy got ill with brain inflammation and died…
