Successful organizations are characterized by effective teamwork. As Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”Indeed, people may come together having certain expectations from collaboration, but this does not necessarily mean that they are really teams. Many ‘teams’ are merely groups of individuals working in the same place. So what is a team? One of the main components of a team in its ideal sense is a common goal, i.e. team’s work is oriented towards a common objective. All the team members decide on the goal and do their best to achieve it. Another component is a fruitful participation of all members in sharing knowledge, taking part in decision making, arriving at a common consensus, and, finally, making those decisions work. Open, honest communication and trust are also very important. Last but not least, there has to be a sense of belonging which helps to orient oneself to a common goal. The main benefits a company can derive from teams is that they are stronger than any group of individuals. They share both blame and success, which helps them recover from failures more quickly, set new goals and achieve better successes. The synergetic effect of a team enables greater staff productivity, meanwhile healthy team relationships are a powerful motivator. In today’s work environment which is constantly changing and great expectations are put on individual achievement, staff can easily lose their balance and slip from cooperation to competition or even confrontation. Thus it is necessary to foster teamwork - by creating a work culture that values collaboration. Principally, efficient teamwork is a skill or a habit which can be developed, for example, through team building games and activities. In general teams are groups of people who able to keep balance between satisfying both their task and relationship needs. Healthy and functional teams contribute to the company’s success, thus it is important that employees work cohesively. Team building activities may be very helpful in encouraging and developing those skills.
