The idea of team appeared in the late 1920s and early 1930s when researchers who investigated the behaviour of groups of people working under certain conditions univocally came to the conclusion that a sense of group identity and a feeling of unity are the most important factors for developing an effective work team. This encouraged companies to think about team building, which has become an integral part of human resource management. To facilitate team spirit among their people, many companies and organisations ranging from football clubs to manufacturing companies now choose the services offered by team building specialists, who offer a wide assortment of team building exercises, games, and bespoke programmes.
What has become very conspicuous in the long run is the demand for novelty in team building programmes. People want something different from the typical team building event. However, you don’t need to look for something literally ‘out this world’: organise a team building weekend abroad, and it will be unusual in any case. A country to spend high quality team building holidays with a difference is Lithuania. Growing inbound tourism in Lithuania after its accession to the EU (the total number of foreign tourists was up 20% reaching 1.8 million in 2004) shows that foreign tourists are interested in Lithuania and that it is still terra incognita for many travellers.
In its turn, the increasing number of arriving tourists has encouraged further improvement and enlargement of the Lithuanian tourism infrastructure. Hotel business and rural tourism are fast developing: during the last several years Lithuania became home to thirteen foreign hotel chains and developed three of its own. Rural tourism, which is a new type of accommodation in Lithuania, currently engages about 500 homesteads. A particular priority has been placed on the opportunities for active leisure and resort development. The EU support helped Lithuanian tourist businesses to improve the quality and boost the assortment of tourist services including team holiday and team building services provided by companies engaged in corporate event and team holiday planning.
An amusing experience of the Lithuanian culture incorporated in your team building day, e.g. tasting Lithuanian dishes, trying the Lithuanian bath, or seeing the sights is ideal for adding your team building event novelty and originality. Regatta on the lake around a medieval castle, a survey flight over the most beautiful places in Lithuania, cycling along the Curonian Spit sand dunes, safari in the Lithuanian woods – these are just a few ideas to spice up your event. It’s as simple as that. |
