If You're Considering Breast Reduction...
Women having very large, sagging breasts may suffer from various medical problems caused by the too much weight. Common problems are back and neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Bra straps may leave indentations in their shoulders. Extraordinarily large breasts can make a woman or a teenage girl feel very embarrassed.
Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is for such women. The procedure involves removing fat, glandular tissue and skin from the breasts. Thus, breasts are made smaller, lighter, and firmer. The procedure may also involve the reduction of the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The procedure is designed to reduce large breasts and improve their shape in proportion with the rest of the woman’s body.
If you’re thinking of undergoing lower eyelid surgery, this information will give you general understanding of the procedure – when it can improve your appearance, how it’s done, and what outcomes can be expected. However, it can’t cover all questions you may have because many answers depend on the individual circumstances. Be sure to ask your doctor if you have any questions concerning the procedure.

The Best Candidates For Breast Reduction
Breast reduction is typically done to achieve physical relief rather than just aesthetic improvement. The majority of women who undergo the surgery are troubled by very large, pendulous breasts which limit their activities and cause physical discomfort.
Normally, breast reduction isn't done until a woman's breasts are fully developed; but the procedure may be performed earlier if large breasts are causing serious physical discomfort. The ideal candidates are women who fully understand the procedure and have realistic expectations for it. The surgery is not recommended for those who intend to breast-feed.

All Surgery Carries Some Uncertainty and Risk
Breast reduction is a quite complicated operation, when done by a qualified plastic surgery specialist, it’s usually safe. However, the possibility of complications exists, including bleeding, infection or negative reaction to the anaesthesia.
In some cases, small sores around the nipples appear after the operation; they can be treated with antibiotic creams. The risks may be reduced by closely following physician's instructions before and after surgery.
Breast reduction does leave visible, permanent scars, although they'll be hidden under your bra or bathing suit. (Impaired healing and wider scars are more frequent in smokers.) It may also happen that your breasts will be slightly unmatched or the nipples unevenly positioned as a result of the procedure. Future breast-feeding may be impossible because many of the milk ducts leading to the nipples are removed during the surgery.
Some patients may permanently lose feeling in their nipples or breasts. In rare cases, the blood supply to the nipple and areola may be lost, which will lead to the death of their tissue. (The nipple and areola can be restored, but using skin grafts from elsewhere on the body.)

Planning Your Surgery
During your first consultation, you should talk about your expectations openly with your surgeon, and to listen to his or her opinion. Every patient and every physician have a different understanding of what is an ideal size and shape for breasts.
The surgeon will examine and measure your breasts, and will perhaps photograph them for reference during surgery and afterwards. (The photographs may also be needed in the processing of your insurance coverage.) He or she will discuss your age, the size and shape of your breasts, and the condition of your skin, which may affect your procedure.
Your surgeon should describe the entire procedure, inform about its risks and limitations and make sure you are aware of the scars that the surgery will leave. The surgeon should also explain the anaesthesia that will be used, the facility where the surgery will be performed, and the costs involved.

Preparing For Your Surgery
You may be required to have a mammogram (breast x-ray) before the operation. You will be given detailed instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications. Some surgeons suggest their patients to diet before the operation.
Breast reduction doesn't normally require a blood transfusion. On the other hand, if a large amount of breast tissue will be removed, you may be advised you to have a unit of blood drawn beforehand. So in case a transfusion is needed, your own blood can be used.
Make sure that someone will be able to drive you home after your surgery and be near for a few days if any help will be needed.

Type of Anaesthesia
Breast reduction is almost always performed under general anaesthesia. You'll be asleep for the operation.

The Surgery

There are various breast reduction techniques, but the most widespread procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision around the areola. The incision goes downward, and then along the natural curve of the crease under the breast. Afterwards, excess glandular tissue, fat and skin are removed. The nipple and areola are moved into their new position. The surgeon then brings the skin from both sides of the breast down and around the areola, creating the new shape of the breast. Liposuction may be used to take away surplus fat from the armpit region.
Usually, the nipples remain joined to their blood vessels and nerves; but if the breasts are very large or sagging, the nipples and areolas may be removed at all and grafted into a higher position. (Consequently, sensation in the nipple and areolar tissue is lost.)
Stitches are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line going downward, and following the lower crease of the breast. Sometimes, techniques can be used that eliminate the vertical scar. When only fat has to be removed, liposuction alone can lessen breast size, and the scars are minimal.

After Your Surgery
After the procedure, the patient is wrapped in an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressings. A small tube may be fixed to each breast for blood and fluids to flow away for the first couple of days.
You may feel some pain for the first couple of days-especially when you move around or cough-and some discomfort for a week or more. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to lessen the pain.
The bandages will be removed a day or two following the operation, although you’ll have to wear the surgical bra all the time for a few weeks weeks, until the swelling and bruising settle. Your stitches will be taken out in 1 to 3 weeks.
If the skin of your breasts is very dry after surgery, you can use a moisturizer several times a day, but be careful to keep the suture site dry.
Your breasts may swell and hurt during your first menstruation after the surgery. You may also feel irregular, shooting pains for several months. You can experience some loss of sensation in your nipples and breast skin, caused by the swelling following the operation. This normally disappears over the next 6 weeks or so. However, the loss of feeling may last a year or more, and, in rare cases, it may be permanent.

Getting Back to Normal
Although you may feel well in about a couple of days, your breasts may still ache from time to time for some 2 weeks. You should avoid lifting or pushing heavy loads for three or four weeks.
Your surgeon will give you detailed orders for carrying on with your usual activities. Normally, women can come back to work (if it’s not too difficult) and social activities in about 2 weeks. However, your energy levels will be much lower than normally for several weeks, so you should limit your exercises to stretching, bending, and swimming until you recover. You’ll also need a good athletic bra for support.
You may be advised to avoid sex for a week or more, as sexual arousal can cause swelling of the incisions, and to avoid any more or less rough contact with your breasts for about 6 weeks.
Some fluid draining from your surgical wound, or some crusting, is normal. If you experience any unusual symptoms (bleeding or severe pain) you should call your doctor without hesitation.

Your New Look
Much of the swelling and bruising will fade in the first several weeks but it may take 6 months to a year for your breasts to settle into their new shape. Even then, their shape may change because of your hormonal shifts, pregnancy or weight changes.
Your surgeon will attempt to make your scars as unnoticeable as possible. However, remember that the scars left after the surgery are extensive and permanent. They often remain lumpy and red for months, then become less noticeable, sometimes finally vanishing to thin white lines. Luckily, the scars can usually be placed so that you can wear even low-cut tops.
The results of breast reduction change the body-image immediately. You’ll free your body from physical discomfort caused by large breasts, the proportions of your body will improve, and clothes will fit you better.
