Year after year, different aspects like pregnancy, nursing and others take their fee on woman’s breasts. With time, the skin becomes not so elastic and because of this breasts lose their shape and firmness. Breast uplift, also known as mastopexy, is a procedure that helps to rise and improve the shape of women’s breasts. However, this procedure is temporal because no surgery can delay such effects permanently. In addition, mastopexy can decrease the areola, the darker skin around the nipple. If for any reason the breasts are small or have lost their shape, the implants inserted with mastopexy can solve this problem. If you are thinking about making your breasts bigger or improving their shape, the following information will help you better understand the process of mastopexy procedure. It will give answers to some questions that might be interesting for you. Nevertheless, it will not completely answer your questions because many factors depend on the individual patient and his/her surgeon.
The Best Candidates For Breast Lift Breast uplift can improve your look but it cannot make you look perfectly. It can make you feel more self-confident but it cannot change the way other people treat you. Before making such an important decision think twice about the positive and negative results that this procedure can bring. Women who know what they want to change in their appearance and are physically and emotionally stable are the best patients for such procedure. Women who have small and flabby breasts can expect the best result from this operation. Different breasts can be improved in their form however, the results will not last as long as for small ones because of the weight. For women who want to improve the form of their breasts and make them more firm mastopexy is a good solution but if you are intending to have more children this procedure should be delayed. The future pregnancy can stretch your breasts again and the results of the operation will be ruined.
Uncertainty and Risk Breast lift or mastopexy is a simple operation, however, like all operations it has to be done by a good specialist in order to achieve good results and to avoid complications. Nevertheless, there is always a possibility of reaction to anesthesia or some other complications. Rare complications as bleeding and infection can cause the widening of scars. To reduce the possibility of such discomfort the patient has to follow his/her physician’s instructions. Breast uplift procedure leaves permanent scars which can be successfully hidden under your bra or bathing suit. It can also make the position of your nipples irregular, or make a permanent loss of feeling in breasts or nipples.
Planning Your Surgery In initial consultation every patient has to discuss ones expectations about the operation. The discussion has to cover all the important aspects of the future operation: the size of breasts, the positive and negative effects of this procedure. The surgeon has to study your breasts, measure them while you are sitting or standing. Your doctor has to mention all the aspects that can affect the results of the operation: your age, the shape and size of breasts and also, the state of your skin. Also, the important aspect is to discuss the position of nipples and areola because during the operation they will be moved higher. The surgeon has to explain the whole process of the operation. He or she has to say what kind of anesthesia will be used, what are the risks of this procedure. Also, the costs have to be discussed with the patient before the operation. You can ask your doctor any question you want because the more answers you have the more easier is to make a decision about the operation.
Preparing For Your Surgery Your age and family history can be the main aspects that can influence the surgeon to make you a mammogram (breast x-ray) before the operation. You also have to have the instructions about the preparation for the surgery. Also, the patient gets certain rules about smoking, drinking, taking vitamins or medications before this procedure. It is important to have someone who will help you to get home after your operation. The Surgery The uplift of breasts (mastopexy) usually takes about one and a half to three and a half hours. There are many different methods, but the mostly used is an anchor-shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast. This incision sketches the zone from which breast skin is removed and defines the new place for the nipple. After removing the surplus skin, the nipple and the areola are moved higher. The skin around the areola is brought down and together to change the shape of the breast. Stitches are usually around the areola in a vertical line expanding downwards from the nipple area, and down the lower wrinkle of the breast. Patients who have small breasts and minimal sagging may require less extensive incisions. Such procedures are called “doughnut (or concentric) mastopexy”, where circular incisions are made around the areola, and doughnut shaped zone is detached. If a patient is having an implant inserted and breast uplift at the same time, it will be put in a pocket under the breast tissue or under the muscle of the chest wall.
After Your Surgery After the operation the patient has to wear an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressings. For a few days you can feel uncomfortable about your breasts, but the pain should not be harsh. Any discomfort can be relieved with medicaments that your surgeon prescribes. After few days the bandages or surgical bra have to be restored by a support bra. This bra has to be worn about three or four weeks. The stitches are removed after a week or two. A moisturizer used several times a day is very useful if your skin is too dry. However, you have to keep it away from the stitched areas. The lack of sensation usually disappears after six weeks. Sometimes, it may last longer, about a year or even more, and seldom may it be permanent.
