The Use of Facial Fat Grafting
Fat grafting can be used to correct facial scarring, remove the signs of aging such as sunken cheeks and facial lines, or create fuller lips.
Fat Grafting in Making Lip Augmentation
During fat grafting surgery, the surgeon uses cannula or syringe to remove fat from donor area and inject it into the treatment area. Lip augmentation procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Depending on the treated area, the operation may take about two hours or more. After the surgery, the patient may feel some swelling in donor area but it lasts for just about a few days. The discomfort can be managed with oral medication.
Side Effects of Fat Grafting
The most apparent side effect is excessive swelling which can last for about two weeks following surgery. Also, some bruising can appear. The most often occurring complications of fat grafting include overcorrection (too much fat injected), undercorrection (the desired results are not achieved), clumping of the graft, infection, scarring in the donor area or bleeding.
After Your Surgery
It is essential to follow the instructions of your surgeon as the period after surgery is very important. There are some limitations that you have to be aware of after the operation: avoid aspirin and ibuprofen about two weeks after the surgery; also, stop smoking about 3-4 weeks before and after the procedure. Moreover, make sure that there will be somebody beside you to take care after you for several days following your treatment.
Avoid massage or excessive facial movement because this can impede the relocation of the fat. To minimize irritation, ice compresses are recommended.
Consultations with your surgeon are also very important during the recovery period. Your doctor has to schedule to see you about a week after the procedure in order to check the donor and the recipient areas. If you are not satisfied with the results, the procedure can be repeated but not earlier than three months after the first operation.
The Longevity of Fat Grafts
It is not known how long the graft lasts. During the first several months, the body absorbs about 65% of the fat. The rest 35% usually remains in the same place. The amount of the absorbed fat and its longevity depend on the method used in grafting. The longevity of fat grafting may be increased using new techniques. To have longer lasting results, patients can obtain three or four treatments over a period of six months or one year.
